Brownies!

When Gianna was little, she became a Daisy. And I became a troop leader. We bridged together and for the next three years she was a Brownie (and I was the troop leader). The red tape and lack of other parental involvement burnt me out and although I loved the concept of scouting, I became disenchanted with Girl Scouts as an organization. Yesterday, the younger girls were introduced to Girl Scouts at homeschool group. They completed three projects that could technically earn them the PUPPETS, DOLLS, AND PLAYS Try It during group. Shaye asked to borrow the Brownie handbook from the woman who brought it to group and all the way home she talked excitedly about being a Brownie. When we got home, she searched the book for activities she could do right away and ending up "earning" herself the SPACE EXPLORER Try It and planned out four activities that her and Mackenna could do today to earn the SCIENCE WONDERS Try It and three(she combined song and play composing- and created a musical!) more to earn the CREATIVE COMPOSING Try It. I had forgotten how fun, educational, and interesting the hands-on activities are- and the girls are thrilled to "earn a Try It". I think I am going to officially register Shaye as an independent Brownie this Thursday.

How do you do it independently? And good for her trying new things!

She can do the activities at home on her own- she doesn't have to join one set group. She works at her own pace- but she is officially registered so she can also attend council wide activites, sell cookies, etc.

Your girls are so stinkin' cute! Good luck on the brownie registration. It's a great idea.

I am so glad Wendy asked that question. We are all about the more fun, more learning, less bureacracy and less running around way of doing things. Looks like you found it! And cute pictures to boot.

I was hesitating "doing Girl Scouts" cause it would be one more thing to take us out and we seem to need to avoid things or they tend to swallow our days. Something has to be REALLY good and almost a critical life skill (like swim lessons) to make me feel it is worth the time each week. I don't mind if a park date or a play group "wastes time" cause Norah is having fun, getting exercise, etc. and it isn't SUPPOSED to be productive. But, I'd hate it if I felt like I had to "take over" to make the group "worth it." I hear a lot of moms feel that way, unfortunately. :( Thanks for sharing. I had no idea girls could register independently. Being independent sounds perfect for us.

Registered her today: Just $10 to register (the year ends 9/30/09 so you might want to wait until September to register your daughter) and $9.95 for the try it book and we are good to go. :)

Mackenna can register in September (she turns 5 in July).

Okay, okay- you twisted my arm- we DID buy two boxes of cookies at the girl scout store... but only one box made it home. ;)

I didn't know it was called Juliettes. That would explain the Juliette patch I saw in the store.

Little trivia: Shaye jined Girl Scouts on the 97th anniversary of the very first girl scout meeting- held by Juliette Low

March 12, 1912.

Pretty neat.
